PHILOSOPHY

Description

The sound study of philosophy not only teaches the students philosophical constructs but also hones their ability to think creatively, critically and independently. Clarity of thought is essential to properly appreciate philosophy, and our Philosophy Tutorial Programme for years 11-13 surely does not disappoint. We challenge the students to develop their critical thinking skills by carefully analysing philosophical arguments and deciphering various texts. Our programme trains the students to think logically and to be able to communicate as well as defend their philosophical positions. This training in how to think is vital for success not just in philosophy but in other academic disciplines as well. The core concern of philosophy is the understanding of what makes us human. Students are exposed to and study the different thoughts, ideas and theories that have been formulated throughout history that all give us glimpses on how we understand ourselves. What is a person? How does the mind relate to the body? What is the self? These are all important philosophical questions that the students will discuss, argue over, and attempt to answer throughout the duration of the course. The Philosophy Programme for years 11-13 tackles a variety of philosophical perspectives. Students can choose which theme they want, in conjunction with what they’re taking up in school:

  • Developing critical and logical thinking
  • Epistemology
  • Ethics
  • Philosophies of religion and art
  • Non-western philosophical traditions and perspectives

Teaching Methodology

Our philosophy tutors use various methods in order to get the students to appreciate philosophy. Through liberal use of example and real-world scenarios, they tie in lofty philosophical concepts to scenarios that the students can easily grasp. They use dialogue, Socratic Method, and lively discussions and debates to help spur on the students’ learning. Students are also given time to reflect on what they’ve learned and express their own ideas and thoughts both orally and in writing.
